Modern Athletics

We're a force of nature

Oh man, the Capitol Hill Block Party was so much fun! Thank you to everyone who came to our show – it was truly amazing and we can’t wait to do it again.

Seismic Sound was there and wrote some kind words about us truly:

…the biggest surprise coming from Modern Athletics. This band, bar none, exceeded my expectations way beyond belief. Not only do they sound good recorded, but live they blew me away. Tight, well layered, great vocals and executed like fucking pros! Very impressive.

And the Daily UW comments on the sweatiness of the show:

Inside a packed and sweaty Cha Cha Lounge, Seattle’s own Modern Athletics didn’t help the hygiene problem much with their energetic and up-tempo songs. And whether it was true or not, it was nice to hear that the band thought those in attendance were the best-looking crowd they’d ever played to.

It’s true! It was super sweaty – but Allen’s new glasses didn’t slip off this time. YEAH!

MODERN ATHLETICS
(Fri, 6:45 pm, Cha Cha Stage)
Modern Athletics are an up-and-coming Seattle band (guitars, bass, drums; all four members sing) that describes itself thusly: “We’re four guys from Seattle, WA… We all wear glasses and make music we like to listen to.” Judging by the recorded evidence, the music they like to listen to includes but is not limited to Neutral Milk Hotel, the Strokes, early New Order, and all eras of Britpop (from the Kinks to the La’s). The resulting mishmash is executed with such goofy joyfulness you’ll find yourself rooting for these geeks. D. SCHMADER

Modern Athletics is part of the line-up, playing Friday, July 23rd at 6:45pm. Just in time for Happy Hour!

Thanks so much to everyone for coming out to Chop Suey. It was a great night, we had a ton of fun, Allen ripped the seat of his pants and we’re now ready to focus our efforts on getting the album finished in time for summer festivals.

First up, the Capitol Hill Block Party in Seattle. We’ll be playing Friday night, July 23, at the Cha Cha Lounge on the party grounds with some excellent bands like The Young Evils and Ravenna Woods. This venue is 21+ and is nice and cozy in case we get some late summer rains.

Then the International Pop Overthrow festival in Seattle in August! We’re also working on some other special events, TBD, but mostly it is recording, recording, recording! And maybe a video or two…

See ya around!

Modern Athletics – that’s us!

WOOHOO!!

Seattle Show Gal reps the show tonight. Come on out! Looks like the headiners Daughters of the Sun and Vampire Hands are gonna rock it!

http://www.seattleshowgal.com/tonight-in-music-chris-staples-daughters-of-the-sun-and-more/

Minneapolis’ Daughters of the Sun are on tour with fellow Minnesotans Vampire Hands (with whom they also have a split LP entitled Skull Judge available on Modern Radio) and they’re hitting the Comet Tavern tonight to bless Seattle with some psychedelic goodness. Daughters of the Sun play psychedelic rock but also use electronic loops and warbles freely. They toe the line between instrumental and electronic psychedelia comfortably and confidently. Based on their various youtube videos, Their shows are loud and are probably best enjoyed under the influence.

Hello lovers,

Modern Athletics is playing yet again. This time we’re at the venerable Comet Tavern on Capitol Hill playing with three other distinct bands, two of which are passing through on tour.

We play first, so get there on time!

When: 5/12, 9:00pm-ish
Where: Comet Tavern
What: $6
Why: Because it’s awesome
Who:
Modern Athletics – that’s us!
Daughters of the Sun – from Minneapolis
Miami Dolphins – the band, not the football team
Vampire Hands – also from Minneapolis

This show is gonna be so freakin’ sweet. You gotta get there. Maybe we’ll have candy.

We got some nice props from the writers at Seattle Show Gal:

They have elements of pop-punk, garage rock, and even some Paul Simon and Cat Stevens in their slower moments.  This appears to be the beginning of a healthy and successful career in Seattle for Modern Athletics. In the coming months they will most likely be faced with what direction they want to go as a band, because behind their quirky lyrics and power chords lies very capable song writing and talent. Don’t let this band fool you with their humorous lyrics: they are serious musicians and make great music.

We’re playing at the High Dive in Fremont on April 28th as part of the Nada Mucho showcase. Come one, come all (mostly come all)!
